Evolution Annual Team Get Together

Each year the two Evolution Office converge for two days to discuss technical issues such as investment trends, cybersecurity, the role of AI on the world and impact on portfolios, regulatory & compliance changes, office efficiencies and servicing our clients better.

However, as the saying goes, all work and no play makes for a boring event, so this year in Townsville we let our artistic flair flourish armed with paint brushes, all to differing degrees of colourful interpretation (aided by a glass of wine!).

Our golden superannuation goose to be plucked again…

Most people would have heard that the Labor Government is initially changing some superannuation rules and taxation on super and pensions. At this point it is only targeted to clients with individual balances over $3mill in super or pensions, and will not start until 1 July 2025, possibly after the next election.

We have always anticipated that politicians will look at super as a honey pot for possible taxation revenue. Questions remain whether this is a contagion that will slowly seep downwards to lower balances in due course and what other measures Labor may bring in.

Should I stay or should I go? To downsize or renovate?

You love your home, but it might not be the best fit for you during retirement. Should you sell and downsize or stay and renovate?

Commodity Prices

Since the pandemic in 2020 we have seen the cost of most commodities around the world increase substantially, some to levels never seen before. In particular the start of this year in January saw a huge spike in all commodities up until the end of June as inflation soared around the world.

These charts illustrate a much different story in the past month or so with some retreating back all the way to 2020 pre pandemic levels and others whilst not falling that significantly still saw them coming off their highs substantially.

This bodes well for cash rates in the near future to rise less than anticipated a few months ago, thus making stocks looking more attractive at current levels to investors for when the market recovery does get underway.

The market always gives opportunities, but only a few are brave enough to take it

Baron Rothschild, a British banker and politician from the wealthy international Rothschild family, once said “Buy when there’s blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own”. In other words, the best time to buy is when the markets run red and everyone else is selling, “when there is blood in the streets.” This article gives a good explanation of common mistakes, the emotions and why it is so hard to do for most people. (Interestingly, this was written at the worst period of COVID19 in early 2020 when doomsayers were predicting a world-wide collapse)

Private Investment Briefings

It has been an exceptionally busy 6 months for us, not only with our usual client work, welcoming new clients onboard, and the enhanced market volatility but also we have hosted 4 Private Investment briefings in Townsville.

These are private equity opportunities that are open to Sophisticated Investors, that each subsequent year thereafter we organise the founders, key employees and financiers to provide insights into how each of the businesses are progressing towards their set targets.

The following link are photos from a number of these that have been held over the last 3 months.
